When it comes to what is necessary for a safe tree removal, as well as the actual tree removal process itself, most homeowners actually know very little. During a tree removal procedure, there is an infinite number of variables that come into play, just as there are a number of different reasons for having to remove a tree in the first place. There are countless methods of getting rid of a tree that require various techniques and equipment, so read on to get some information about the reasons and ways to remove trees.
Why Would You Need to Remove a Tree?
Reasons that involve having to get rid of a tree from your property or somewhere near your home can include everything from trees that are structurally unstable, declining/dying or even fully dead trees, to those that are aesthetically challenged (unattractive), as well as those that need to be gotten rid of due to landscaping needs or even because of overcrowding (trees grow best when they do not compete with each other). Each of these reasons creates a problem for either the homeowner or one’s neighbors, and require the problematic trees to be cut down.
What are the Different Methods for Removal?
There are several methods with which one could complete this:
-Taking down the entire tree in one cut
-Climbing the tree and cutting it down in sections
-Removing the tree with a crane
Taking Down the Entire Tree in One Cut
The simplest way to get the tree onto the ground, this technique involves estimating the height of the trunk and figuring out if there is enough room nearby to safely drop the entire tree. Additional steps include thoroughly examining the tree to understand its angle, symmetry and any defects in the trunk, all of which could seriously affect the entire operation. Once the cutter has thoroughly examined the tree, a rope will be tied to the top of it, then a notch will be planned and cut into the trunk. The rope will be used to guide the tree in the desired falling direction, upon which the final cut will be made and, if all previous steps were performed competently and correctly, the entire tree will go down exactly as planned.
Climbing the Tree and Cutting it Down in Sections
For trees that are close to obstacles such as power lines and structures, the most common way to remove them is to have a cutter climb the tree and start cutting away sections of it piece by piece. This technique also starts with examining the tree and formulating a plan. Once the central point to set the rigging has been identified, the cutter will climb the tree and remove all the necessary limbs, one branch and piece at a time. After removing all of the branches and leaving only the bare trunk, the trunk itself will also be cut into the desired lengths and lowered to the ground either by simply being dropped from its height (if there is ample room available) or by being slowly lowered with ropes.
Removing the Tree With a Crane
Using a crane to remove problematic trees is the most efficient, safe and up-to-date way of handling the problem. Once the crane is in place and leveled, the boom will be telescoped out and placed over the tree that needs to be removed. Using different cables with the help of an expert climber, the crane operator will then lift up the climber to connect the cable to different parts of the tree, starting at the top. Once tied in, the climber will then be lowered to the predetermined cut area. Upon making the cut, the crane operator will simply lift the cut section off of the tree and swing it to the landing zone. The crew will then disconnect the cable in the landing zone so that the crane operator and climber can repeat the process and remove another section of the tree. These steps will continue until the entire tree has been removed.
