Removing a Tree in Cambridge? Pruning Tips to Maintain Trees

Even those of us who aren’t blessed with a green thumb enjoy having a tranquil outside area to relax in during the mild weather. As we move from summer into the mild Fall weather, trees are turning from green to brown, providing a kaleidoscope of colourful Fall foliage. While enjoying the vibrant colors and Fall weather, have a look around your garden, checking for trees and shrubs that may need of a prune this winter.

Most deciduous trees benefit from regular maintenance and the best time to prune, for most species, is during the winter. As the tree naturally dies back in the cold weather, tree removal experts in Cambridge prefer to prune them. It also means your garden or yard is free of potentially dangerous loose or dead branches that can become hazardous projectiles in strong winds and storms.

Here are five handy tips for maintaining your trees and preventing the need for removing the tree altogether:

1. Shape and Structure

As the leaves, fruit, and flowers drop off, the bare shape of the tree is exposed, making it easier for professional arborists to evaluate the tree’s structure and assess whether it simply needs a good prune or whether they need to go ahead with the complete tree removal process in Cambridge.

2. Reduces Disease

Arborists and tree specialists advocate pruning in the winter months as it helps to eradicate the fungi, parasites, and bacteria that are responsible for some of the most serious diseases affecting trees in the Cambridge area. During winter, these bacteria and parasites are dormant, meaning they can be more easily removed and reduce the possibility of transmission when spring comes.

3. Less Stress

Pruning in the Fall is often believed to be advantageous for the tree’s health but has its disadvantages. Firstly, pruning prior to the winter season can provoke the tree to produce new growth which will be killed by the first frost or cold spell.

4. Nature and Nurture

Although many of us believe that pruning is simply a matter of removing unwanted branches and modelling the tree to our own concept of the ideal shape, it is a far more complex procedure. Experienced tree specialists have the knowledge required to trim the tree according to the client’s requirements while respecting the needs of the tree itself. They will also perform heavy-duty pruning safely, ensuring the longevity of the tree and preventing damage to other plants and buildings in the vicinity.

5. Practical Considerations

As the cold weather sets in, the ground becomes hard and frozen. For tree removal experts in Cambridge, this is beneficial both for taking away an older tree and for extensive pruning. Not only can they bring in the necessary equipment to perform these tasks without damaging your land, they can also work faster and more efficiently.

No matter how confident you feel about creating the perfectly shaped or the most abundant fruit-bearing tree, the actual process of tree removal and pruning can be extremely dangerous. Not only can you damage your home and yard, you could also cause yourself serious injury. For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that you contact experienced professionals, such as Martin’s Tree, to perform such tasks for you. Not only will the remaining trees be healthier, but you’ll also avoid the possibility of hefty medical bills resulting from an unfortunate accident.

Pruning a tree is important. Knowing how to and when to is really a tree by tree-based decision! What I need to know is when to remove a tree. Do you have any more information on that? Thanks!

I like what you said about pruning in the winter months because it gets rid of fungi. I think that hiring a professional tree service is the best way to keep your plants in good condition. If I were to need such services, I would ask around in order to find the best company in my area.

I have a profound interest in trees and their natural beauty. I grew up on a hobby farm ten minutes north of Waterloo and spent many winters in the bush collecting firewood to heat our family home. It was definitely work, so I wasn't always eager as a young boy to help my Father and big Brother, but I learned to love the process. Without knowing it, it had started my path towards becoming an Arborist and seeing trees in a new light. I've come a long way since those days in the bush, but am always learning more through books, conferences and being in the field learning from the trees themselves.  Follow along as I periodically blog about insights into our world and simple tips to keep your trees in tip top shape for generations to enjoy!
