Owning a property filled with beautiful trees is often a notion that appeals to most homeowners. But, one thing many seem to forget when it comes to trees is that they require pruning and maintenance to remain healthy. While pruning trees may sound like a burden to some, there are actually a number of important reasons to consider investing in this necessary service. One of the most important reasons is that it can extend the life of a tree. Continue reading to learn about the many benefits of  tree maintenance.

Why is the Pruning of Trees in Your Yard Important?

Having trees on your property is great, but there are important considerations to keep in mind when contemplating whether or not to invest in their maintenance. Reasons in favour of pruning include:

  • Pruning is ideal if a particular tree is blocking too much light
  • There is ample amount of dead wood on the tree
  • Tree limbs are too close to your home’s siding, roof or gutters
  • Excess weight on droopy or long branches
  • Tree branches are interfering with your views and activities around such areas as a pool, patio, windows, doorways and driveway
  • Broken branches are hanging in a tree, which represent a serious safety hazard

Do I Need Pruning if There Are No Obvious Causes for It?

When making a decision to prune your tree, it is important to use common sense. While there are a number of clear signs for it to be done, there are many other reason which are not as obvious to the untrained eye. They include:

  • Pruning increases safety for people, cars, play areas and other outdoor structures
  • The improved aesthetics of a particular pruned tree could improve your appreciation of it
  • Pruned trees have a decreased wind resistance, which results in reducing the chances of the tree falling over or broken branches due to high winds
  • Pruning improves the structural integrity of both individual branches and the whole tree
  • Ideal if there are tree branches that are interfering with cable, telephone or power lines
  • It is very helpful in eliminating damage to the tree if there are any branches that are rubbing or crossing each other
  • Pruning helps remove diseased or weak branches, which minimizes the spread of pests and diseases

I'm grateful for your advice about tree pruning. You are right in saying that those broken branches hanging in a tree, can be a serious safety hazard. This actually happened in our house yesterday. While the kids were swimming, some broken branches fell directly to the pool out of the old tree.

I like how you mentioned that pruned trees has less wind resistance, so there is less of a chance for them to fall over. My area has been getting some pretty bad windstorms, so it sounds like trimming my tree could better protect my home. What are some qualities I should look for when selecting a tree trimming service?

There really are several reasons to consider hiring a tree trimming service to come out and prune your trees. As the article points out, one of the big reasons to do it is if the trees are growing to close to important structures like power lines. After all, you do not want your tree getting tangled in and breaking your power line, so you'll want to get the branches removed as soon as possible.

I think it would be a good idea for me to start pruning my trees more during the spring and summer. It's good to know that tree pruning is great for making sure a tree isn't blocking too much light, like you said. I actually didn't realize that. I don't want my trees to end up blocking a lot of light from my windows.

It's interesting to know that tree pruning is ideal if a particular tree is blocking too much light. My husband and I are building a pool in our backyard and we notice that our tree will block the sun. I believe that pruning a couple of branches of the tree will allow the sunlight to reach the entire pool.

I have a profound interest in trees and their natural beauty. I grew up on a hobby farm ten minutes north of Waterloo and spent many winters in the bush collecting firewood to heat our family home. It was definitely work, so I wasn't always eager as a young boy to help my Father and big Brother, but I learned to love the process. Without knowing it, it had started my path towards becoming an Arborist and seeing trees in a new light. I've come a long way since those days in the bush, but am always learning more through books, conferences and being in the field learning from the trees themselves.  Follow along as I periodically blog about insights into our world and simple tips to keep your trees in tip top shape for generations to enjoy!
